New State Math Curriculum
The NYS high school math curriculum is currently
transitioning from the Math A/Math B program to the Algebra 1,
Geometry, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry sequence. Students currently
enrolled in Shaker High School’s Unified 1, Unified 2, IRP 1, IRP 2,
and Math 9R classes are studying the new Algebra 1 curriculum and
will take the Algebra 1 Regents examination in either June 2008 (for
Unified 2, IRP 2 and 9R) or June 2009 (for Unified 1 and IRP 1).
Students who have already earned credit for Math 9R will remain in
the Math A/Math B program, moving on to the Math B curriculum in
Math 10R, 10H, 11R, 11H, 11A, and 11B. Math 11R, 11H, and 11B
classes all culminate with the Math B Regents exam. In order to
graduate, students must pass, with a grade of 65 or better, either
the Algebra 1 exam or the Math A exam. Students who pass the Math B
Regents exam are eligible for an Advanced Regents diploma.
Calculators
The Math Department recommends that
students purchase the Texas Instruments TI83Plus graphing
calculator. This calculator will be used in all math classes
throughout students’ four years of high school and into their
college work. The TI84 is a newer model and is also acceptable. For
Advanced Placement Calculus, students may use the TI 83, TI84, TI86,
or TI89, however, the TI 83 will be used during teacher
demonstrations.
As in past years, we will have calculators
available in every math classroom for daily loan. Students who do
not purchase their own calculator may borrow one for class work.
Students are permitted to use a graphing calculator on the Algebra 1
and Math A Regents exams and are required to use one on the Math B
exam.
