January 22, 2010 - Mrs. Passino’s first
grade class couldn’t stop laughing and cheering as they
watched Blenda Rodriguez and Firefly (Tay) Fisher display
their basketball skills right in front of them. Blenda and
Firefly, as they introduced themselves, were at Latham Ridge
on January 22 to help promote WGNA’s Readin’ Writin’ and
Rhymin’ program.
The Globetrotters, world renowned goodwill ambassadors, brought
their C.H.E.E.R. for Character program into the classroom which
focuses on Cooperation, Healthy mind & body, Effort, Enthusiasm,
and Responsibility, using the acronym “C.H.E.E.R.”. The students
shared examples of these traits that they have experienced in
their lives.
Following the instructional portion of the
visit, Blenda and Firefly broke out a few basketball moves and
tricks and even taught them to the students.

To add to the excitement of the day, WGNA radio personality
Richie Phillips from the Sean and Richie Show helped the first
grade class write lyrics to the Globetrotter’s theme song “Sweet
Georgia Brown”. This is part of a bigger effort by WGNA and
their Readin’, Writin’ and Rhymin Program. Earlier this year,
Phillips visited Boght Hills and worked with a third grade class
in developing a song. The first graders at Latham Ridge came up
with the lyrics in just under twenty minutes. The song will be
played on the Sean and Richie Show on Monday, January 25.
