It was a spring afternoon and Domenico “Nico” Clermont, a fifth-grade student at Blue Creek Elementary, his brother Alessio, and some friends were out riding their bikes. Suddenly things took a frightening turn.
Alessio, a Shaker Middle School student, fell off his bike. He hit his head on the pavement and was knocked unconscious.
At first, Nico thought his big brother was faking. He quickly realized this wasn’t a joke. His brother was unconscious. Nico quickly sprang into action – using Alessio’s phone to call his parents and 911. His swift actions prevented his brother from experiencing further life-threatening injuries.
Nico is North Colonie’s May Kids Care recipient. He was nominated by his teacher Mr. Matthew Trudeau. “Nico is considered a hero,” stated Mr. Trudeau. “This is just one of the many scenarios where Nico’s caring and leadership skills were put on display. Nico is not only a natural born leader out of school and in athletics, but he is a leader in the classroom as well. He ensures all students are provided with the tools and skills needed for success.”
Alessio, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, had a brief hospital stay followed by rehabilitation and rest at home. He’s back in school.
When asked how Nico knew what to do amidst an incredibly scary situation, his mom, Cadi, says she’s not entirely sure. “Nico reacted perfectly. He didn’t lose his cool the entire time. We are so proud of him.”
As for receiving this award, Nico says he’s “really excited.”
In his free time, he enjoys playing outside with his friends and video games. He is in the Albany Power Lacrosse League and plays basketball with the Albany Capitals. His favorite food is pasta with butter sauce and salt. During the summer, he and his family will spend time up at their camp at Sacandaga Lake.
