Shaker High School junior Anabelle Vasquez was honored in Washington, D.C. recently as winner of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition in the 20th District of New York.
Anabelle’s artwork was chosen from among 24 student submissions representing nine high schools across the 20th congressional district. The winners from across the United States, in each district, were invited to the U.S. Capitol for a breakfast reception, Capitol tour, and a program led by members of Congress and key staff. The 20th District of New York is represented by Paul D. Tonko.
Anabelle’s colored pencil drawing titled “Scopophobia” will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year. The tunnel is the most highly traveled access point between the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Capitol. Millions of visitors to the U.S. Capitol view this exhibit each year.
Annabelle, her father Freddy Vasquez, and Shaker High School Art teacher, LynnMarie Paris were hosted by Bayley Connors, Legislative Correspondent/Staff Assistant to Congressman Paul Tonko. Bayley is a 2016 Shaker High School graduate.
Anabelle will be continuing with Advanced Art & Design II in her junior year at Shaker. Congratulations, Anabelle!
