SHS Junior Receives Merit of Commendation for John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Contest

Please join us in congratulating SHS Junior Samya Madhukar! Samya was awarded the Merit of Commendation from the John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Prize’s History contest. With over 35,000 submissions, Samya was one of 6,000 finalists to make it to the final round. She received the honor of a Merit of Commendation for her essay.

The John Locke Institute’s Global Essay contest allows for participants to choose one of seven subject areas – philosophy, politics, economics, history, psychology, theology, and law. The goal of the Essay Competition is to encourage students to “explore a wide range of challenging and interesting questions beyond the confines of the school curriculum.”

For her essay, Samya focused on history. Her essay explored the role of music in inspiring social movements, while highlighting the role music has had throughout the course of history. This topic allowed her to blend her love of music and history, allowing her to explore the social movements that were fueled by music.

“The process of writing a research-intensive historical essay was incredibly rewarding and it was an exciting opportunity to even get shortlisted,” said Samya. “Then I was really shocked to hear I received the Merit of Commendation, as it’s a very prestigious award.”

Congratulations to Samya on this wonderful achievement!
