2110, School Board Power and Duties

As mandated by State law, the Board of Education shall be responsible for the overall education program of the district. This responsibility includes planning and policy making, evaluating and reporting. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Board will determine educational goals, educational programs, provide facilities, employ personnel, prescribe duties, provide transportation, raise revenue, allocate funds, enforce policy and establish a planned program of public relations and cooperate with other community agencies to accomplish these pre-determined goals.

Board policy is expressed through specifically approved statements of policy, through actions taken by the Board as reflected in the minutes of Board meetings and through such documents as the school district budget.

The Board of Education also has the responsibility of hiring the Superintendent of Schools and completing annual performance evaluations of the Superintendent in accordance with the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and the employment contract between the Superintendent and the school district.

School Visits

Members of the Board are encouraged to visit schools as a means of gaining better knowledge and understanding of the district’s educational program. The visiting Board Member is requested to follow all policies related to visitors and inform the Building Principal of his/her presence in order that the staff may provide any background information and assistance necessary.
