Cora Barron, an eighth-grade Shaker Middle School student, was recognized on Monday, Feb. 28 at the Board of Education meeting as the February 2022 North Colonie Kids Care recipient.
Cora was nominated by Ms. Caroline Purdy, her literature and writing teacher. “Cora has shown remarkable leadership traits this year. She has advocated for herself and her peers. She is kind, compassionate, and sticks up for others. She is an amazing kid,” said Ms. Purdy.
Cora reached out to Shaker Middle School Principal Davis Chamberlain to discuss her concerns about PPE, cleaning supplies, the backpack program, and feminine products. She met with Mr. Chamberlain, and they created a google survey that was sent out to middle school students to ask them their concerns and thoughts on these topics as well. The survey received 700 responses.
“I know that there’s a lot of kids who don’t have the confidence to ask for things they may need. I have the confidence to speak out and I want to help others,” said Cora.
Cora grew up in Ireland and holds dual citizenship. Currently a Cohoes resident, her family moved to the United States in 2018 and she attended Boght Hills Elementary.
The eldest of four children, she babysits her siblings most afternoons after school.
A High Honor Roll student, she likes writing. She loves fashion and shopping and is a self-professed “shopaholic.” She also enjoys cooking and baking and has made cheesecakes, chicken marinara, and other creations for her family. She’s considering a career as a baker or chef.
She credits her family for inspiring her to help others. Congratulations, Cora!
