Research may show high school-aged students need to sleep later, but apparently Shake High School Bisons like to buck data points.
Badminton birdies and basketballs dominate the scene in Shaker Gym H weekday mornings before classes start. Since the start of the 2022-23 school year, SHS has opened its gym doors at 6:45 a.m. for morning intramurals.
The addition of Monday-Friday morning intramurals has been a great opportunity for our students who may not have the ability to attend after school, Athletic Director Matt Stein said. Also a number of students really enjoy being active for 30-40 minutes in the morning as opposed to sitting in the cafeteria waiting for the bell.
On Oct. 11, the first morning back after a three-day weekend, the sign-ins had hit 57 before 7 a.m. The program max’s out at 60, according to PE teachers supervising the program.
