Smart. Bold. Resilient. Talented.
Stubborn. Creative. Musical. Brave.
Words Southgate fourth-grade students used to describe the leaders, poets, athletes, and musicians they researched throughout February in honor and celebration of Black History Month.
The first group of nervous but enthusiastic students stepped to the front of the class Feb. 29 and clearly demonstrated the depth of their knowledge about Condoleezza Rice, Stevie Wonder, Simone Biles, Colin Kaepernick, and Amanda Gorman. But they displayed something even more.
“It has been incredibly encouraging to watch the student’s excitement for the project move from a place of curiosity to celebration of their researched individual,” said teacher Vanessa Fulmore. “They have taken such pride in their work and new knowledge of our country’s history.”
That pride came through loud and clear in one of the first presentations. Student Isaiah Williamson eagerly and energetically shared what he learned about Stevie Wonder. But also, using the templates to help structure his presentation, including how to write paragraph #1 to introduce the topic and “grab your reader’s attention!” he also wrote, “have you ever wanted to be a musician? Well if you have you probably want to learn about this guy.”
Students were graded on such things as selection of topic, content, research, organization, and creativity, as well their overall presentation to the entire class.
Congratulations to Ms. Fulmore and all the fourth-graders for such fantastic work!
