Alpine Skiing
Shaker High School Students
Beginning this winter sports season the Shaker Athletic Department is now offering the sports of Alpine Skiing and Nordic Skiing for both girls and boys. Please read below to learn more about the parameters to participate in these programs.
- MUST be an experienced skier with some race experience (This is NOT recreational downhill skiing like ski club)
- Competition races are slalom and giant slalom.
- The season begins November 14th and the first 3-4 weeks are dry land training.
- Transportation will be provided to and from competitions and practices at mountains.
- Some dry land practices will be at Shenendehowa HS at the start of the season. Transportation to these practices will be provided but a return will need to be a parent pick up (from Shen). Dry land practices at Shen will be 3 -4 p.m.
Equipment and Expenses
- Athletes will need to provide their own equipment and gear (skis, boots, poles, cold weather gear, race gear) and purchase a weeknight season pass at West Mountain ($400).
- Shaker Athletics will provide transportation, coaches, entry fees, and gaits. When at the mountain a charter bus will remain to be used as a warming station and changing area.

We will email all those who complete the form about an informational meeting date and time with the coaches to explain more about the specifics of the season and program.
7th and 8th grade students
- Alpine Skiing is classified as a Varsity Sport which means 7th and 8th graders are subject to the APP process.

Nordic Skiing
Shaker High School Students
Beginning this winter sports season the Shaker Athletic Department is now offering the sports of Alpine Skiing and Nordic Skiing for both girls and boys. Please read below to learn more about the parameters to participate in these programs.
- This is cross country skiing, NOT downhill.
- Athletes do not need to be experienced skiers to participate in nordic skiing, but do need to be aware that this is an aerobic sport.
- Shaker Nordic Skiing is a co-ed team but girls and boys will only compete against their own gender.
- The season will start with dry land training, similar to cross country/track workouts with weight lifting (and fun) in between.
- Once there is snow, we will have practices on campus and off campus.
- Transportation will be provided to and from competitions and off campus practices.
- High school seasons alternate between classic and skate. This year, competitions will be classic.
- Practices will start at 5 p.m. at Shaker HS.
Equipment and Expenses
- Athletes will need to provide their own ski boots (combi boots are preferred). If you have your own skis and poles, you may use those (note: nordic skis are different from alpine skis).
- Shaker Athletics will provide transportation, coaches, entry fees, and uniforms.

Shaker Girls Wrestling
Beginning this winter sports season the Shaker Athletic Department is now offering the sport of Girls Wrestling. Please read below to learn more about the parameters to participate in these programs.
- NO Experience necessary! Girls wrestling is a rapidly emerging sport with many beginners and experienced competitors.
- Competition schedule will consist of weekday matches and Saturday tournaments.
- The season begins November 14th and practices will be predominantly in the evening (5:30 or 6 p.m. start)
- Shaker Girls Wrestling will be partnering with Colonie Girls Wrestling to provide a greater variety of practice partners and experience levels in an effort to grow each school’s program but will compete representing their own schools.
- As an emerging sport some practices may take place in conjunction with other schools who have added girls wrestling to create a community and grow participation such as Shenendehowa, Guilderland, and Niskayuna.
- Daily practice locations will take place at the SHS and SMS wrestling rooms along with the Colonie High School wrestling room.
Equipment and Expenses
- Athletes will need to provide their own practice gear (t-shirts, shorts, leggings, wrestling shoes)
- Shaker Athletics will provide transportation, coaches, entry fees, and uniforms.

Shaker Girls Bowling
Beginning this winter sports season the Shaker Athletic Department is now offering the sport of Girls Bowling. Please read below to learn more about the parameters to participate in these programs.
- The 2022-23 Girls Bowling team will be a merged team with Colonie. This means the team will consist of students from both Shaker and Colonie for all program purposes (practice, matches, coaches, etc.)
- A full league schedule, non-league schedule, and sectionals will be offered.
- The season begins November 14th and practices will be at Latham Spare Time lanes. Practice will begin about 3:00-3:30 and students will be bussed to Spare Time.
- The Girls Bowling Program competes at the varsity level along with exhibition players.
- Some experience will be beneficial for the try out period.

- Athletes will need to provide their own bowling ball and bowling shoes.
- Shaker Athletics will provide transportation, coaches, entry fees, and uniforms.

Open Bowling for Middle School Students
We’re offering sessions to help engage students grades 6-8 interested in bowling and to help those interested in joining a growing, fun team get a head start. Students can attend one session or all three!
Thursdays: 10/13, 10/27, 11/10
Cost: $10/Date for 3 games and shoes
