An Update from Superintendent Corr

Dear North Colonie Community:

I am writing to follow-up on the racist incident that occurred at Forts Ferry Elementary last weekend. North Colonie CSD continues to work closely with the Colonie Police Department on the ongoing investigation.

In the spirit of justice, as we move forward we continue to acknowledge the impact of the pain and hurt of this act on our Black and Brown students, families, and staff. We continue our planning and work to acknowledge, recognize, educate, and respond to this hateful act.

Please know that I will continue to provide updates to the school community as appropriate.

Sincerely,

D. Joseph Corr
Superintendent

NC’s Kicks off United Way Campaign

North Colonie CSD is pleased to announce their continued partnership with the United Way of the Greater Capital Region and the North Colonie PTA Council to raise funds to support our students in need. One in five students at North Colonie live in poverty. There are also many more living just above the poverty line. All of these students have struggles with food insecurity. Monies donated to this fund drive will go to off-set the cost of student meals, fill backpacks, provide necessary items for our food pantries and support our holiday giving program. Click here to read more about our campaign and how you can help.

Haikus All Around – SHS Students Represent at Poetry Festival

Shaker High School was well represented at the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival High School Student Day! Traveling to Newark, N.J., for the festivities were 36 10th- through 12th-grade students and six English teachers.

The student day, held Oct. 21, is part of a three-day event designed to introduce teenagers to living poets from widely diverse backgrounds. The Shaker students who attended came from a range of clubs, including English Council, the Shaker Writing Center, Visions Literary and Art Magazine, The Bison student newspaper, and Project Lit.

Both teachers and students described the day as inspirational! The lineup included former U.S. Poets Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winners, and the participants attended a variety of panel discussions, craft talks, and readings.
