We are pleased to share that Shaker High School student artwork was selected as the winner of this year’s 2021 Congressional Art Competition sponsored by The Congress of the United States! Each year the Shaker High School Art Department is invited to submit three pieces of student artwork for consideration in this prestigious area show.
This is a nationwide art competition held annually that accepts students from across the United States, providing them with a unique venue to showcase their artistic abilities. Each Member of Congress has the privilege of submitting one piece of artwork from their district to be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol. The student selected from our congressional district will have the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to attend a ceremony unveiling their artwork in the fall of this year.
The curator for the Arts Center of the Capital Region recently reviewed the work submitted by many area high schools within the congressional district. The top winner of the competition was our Shaker HS junior, Mary Kate Sullenberger, for her exquisite colored pencil rendering titled, “Sinking.” Sophomore Lucy Lee was presented an Honorable Mention for her meticulous “Self Portrait” paper collage, and we are very proud of the poignant acrylic painting “Bet” by Hyerin Park, grade 11. As the winning selection this year, Mary Kate’s work will represent our Congressional District for a year in Washington D.C.
