Haroon Syed, a Shaker High School junior, was recognized on Monday, March 28 at the Board of Education meeting as the March 2022 North Colonie Kids Care recipient.
Haroon was selected for his humanitarian work with refugees. After he learned about refugees coming to the Capital District, he wanted to help. He worked with his parents and the Al-Hidaya Center to develop a plan and raise funds from the community for their much needed health and personal items.
When he first visited the families, he conducted a ten question survey that he created to ascertain their health needs. “Many refugees are coming from an area without any basic medication. I came up with a health kit system and put together over the counter medications for the refugees,” he said.
Based on his findings, he created a shopping list of medical supplies and personal items and delivered them at his second visit.
“My parents are always trying to help other families that come here. It has motivated me to help in my community. I also like to look around and reflect on how I live compared to others who are not as fortunate as me,” he explained.
Haroon resides in Cohoes with his parents and younger sister. An honor roll student, he likes science and math. He plays Varsity Volleyball and is member of the Medical Club, Shaker Student Government, Science Olympiad, and American Red Cross. He enjoys soccer, running, and swimming.
He plans to continue his community service and is considering ways to expand his work. “I want to help others live in a better environment. I feel that helping is good for others, but it also makes me happy.”
Congratulations, Haroon!
