SHS Students Host Java Coding Club at Colonie Library

What did you do over winter break? Two Shaker High School sophomore students brought the classroom to the Colonie Town Library, by hosting a Java Coding Club. Twin brothers Aryan and Aryush Sharma did not mind spending their break surrounded by books and computers. In fact, they were excited to be able to offer a coding club to students in grades 6-8. A total of ten students participated in the club.

“Not many kids know the basics of computer science when entering the Computer Science 1 class,” said Aryan. “The library is a good community and felt like a good space to do this.”

“We didn’t mind giving up the break to do this,” added Aryush. “We’ve been interested in computers since we were little, so it’s a good use of our time and it’s nice to have something like this to do.”

When not hosting a java club, the duo is a part of the library Tech Tutors program. The program offers technology help to members of the community, allowing them to make an appointment and be matched with a tutor. The Sharma brothers are natural teachers and are frequently requested as tutors.

The Java Coding Club was a success, with students engaged and excited to attend. After completing the challenges the Sharma brothers put before them, each student was given a candy reward. The brothers are already busy planning their next Java Coding Club.
