Latham Ridge 5th Graders Donate Birthday Boxes to Regional Food Bank to Celebrate 1,000th Day of School

Every year for the past five years, fifth graders at Latham Ridge have celebrated their 1,000th day of school (100th day of this school year) by participating in a community service project. The Panthers collected donations school wide to go toward supplies to create “birthday boxes” for families in need. In total, students and teachers put together 408 boxes which they donated to the Regional Food Bank on Thursday, February 13, their 1,000th day of school.

Each birthday box contained a disposable tin with a box of cake mix, a can of frosting, candles and a can of Sprite (which can be substituted for the eggs and oil called for in the recipe). The donations totaled 1,252 pounds worth of items. Students also created handmade birthday cards to include in each box.

In addition to the donation of birthday boxes to the Regional Food Bank, fifth grade students and their families celebrated by doing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) activities at stations in the auditorium. These fifth grade students, families, and teachers are making an impact and leaving a legacy at Latham Ridge and in the greater community!
