Welcome to Southgate Elementary!  Southgate firmly believes in the tenets of the district’s mission statement, especially the premise of all.  We are an inclusive school community where every student is met where they are and aided to achieve at the highest level in all areas. We believe in every student’s success!  Southgate celebrates diversity in all aspects knowing every student, faculty/staff member and parent/guardian are an important member of our school community and district.  It’s great to be a Gator!  

The opening bell rings at 9 a.m., and students arriving by bus or being dropped off enter the building. Students who are located in the “walk zone” are to walk to the school’s main entrance no earlier than this time. Students other than walkers are to remain in their vehicle and proceed through the drop off line.  Students who are not walkers are not to be dropped off prior to 9 a.m. There is no supervision before school for those who are not directly part of the Colonie Youth Center’s Before/After School Program.

The official academic day at Southgate is 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  If a student arrives at school after 9:15 a.m., a parent or guardian must sign the child in at the main office. Students who arrive after 9:15 a.m. are considered late, which will be reflected in their attendance record.  At the end of the school day, dismissal by bus and parent pick-up begins at 3:40 p.m. Students walking home are dismissed prior to the buses being loaded for the ride home.

Nursing Notes

A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.

When is my child sick enough to stay home from school? This is not always an easy question to answer. We hope that the tips below can help. Our school policy states that you should NOT send your child to school if he/she has:

  • Had an abnormal temperature in the past 24 hours: 100 degrees or above orally or 101 degrees or above rectal

  • Been vomiting in the past 24 hours

  • Had diarrhea in the past 24 hours

  • A sore throat and waiting for strep culture

  • Been diagnosed with an infection (i.e. pneumonia, bronchitis, strep, scarlet fever). The child must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours prior to returning to school.

  • A bad cold with a very runny nose or bad cough (especially if it has kept the child awake at night)

  • Head lice – until your child has been treated according to the doctor’s instruction.

If your child becomes ill at school and the school nurse feels that the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home. It is essential that we have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached.
